What Happened Between Anthropic and OpenAI?
In a recent article by Wired, it was revealed that Anthropic has blocked OpenAI’s access to the Claude API. This action was taken after Anthropic discovered that OpenAI’s engineers were utilizing Claude Code for their GPT development activities, which was a violation of the terms of use.
According to Christopher Nulty, a spokesperson for Anthropic, using Claude for projects is allowed, but using it to develop competing products is not permitted. This move by Anthropic came just before the anticipated launch of GPT-5, which is rumored to have advanced coding capabilities that could rival Claude.
It seems like Claude Code has become quite popular among coders, including OpenAI’s technical staff. However, using our coding tools for their own projects goes against our terms of service.
OpenAI, on the other hand, sees the use of Claude as a standard practice for evaluating AI systems. Hannah Wong, Chief Communications Officer at OpenAI, mentioned that benchmarking progress and improving safety are common practices in the industry.
While we understand Anthropic’s decision, we believe it’s essential to evaluate other AI systems for benchmarking and safety purposes.
Despite the restriction, OpenAI’s APIs are still available to Anthropic. The ban only applies to using Claude APIs for vibe coding, but OpenAI can continue using them for industry-standard evaluations.
