AI Adoption Surges While Governance Lags — Report Warns of Growing Shadow Identity Risk – Latest Hacking News

Baltimore, MD, December 2nd, 2025, CyberNewsWire

Hey there, curious minds! Have you heard about the latest findings from the 2025 State of AI Data Security Report? It’s a real eye-opener, revealing a fascinating contradiction in enterprise security that we all need to pay attention to.

Imagine this: AI adoption is at an all-time high, with a whopping 83% of organizations using AI in their daily operations. But here’s the kicker – only 13% of them feel like they have strong visibility into how these AI systems handle sensitive data. It’s a bit of a head-scratcher, isn’t it?

Produced by the brilliant minds at Cybersecurity Insiders in collaboration with the innovative folks at Cyera Research Labs, this study gathered insights from 921 cybersecurity and IT professionals across different industries and organization sizes.

The data paints a picture of AI behaving like an ungoverned identity – a non-human entity that operates at lightning speed, accessing vast amounts of information continuously. Yet, most organizations are still using human-centric identity models that struggle to keep up with AI’s pace. This has led to two-thirds of them catching AI tools over-accessing sensitive data, with 23% admitting they have no controls in place for prompts or outputs.

Autonomous AI agents emerge as the most vulnerable frontier, with 76% of respondents finding them the hardest systems to secure. Shockingly, 57% lack the ability to block risky AI actions in real-time. Visibility into AI usage is sparse, with nearly half reporting no insight at all and another third having minimal understanding – leaving many enterprises in the dark about where AI operates and what data it interacts with.

Governance structures are also playing catch-up with AI adoption. Only 7% of organizations have a dedicated AI governance team, and a mere 11% feel ready to meet emerging regulatory requirements. It’s clear that readiness gaps are widening, and action is needed.

The report advocates for a shift towards data-centric AI oversight, emphasizing continuous discovery of AI use, real-time monitoring of prompts and outputs, and identity policies that treat AI as a distinct actor with limited access based on data sensitivity.

“AI is no longer just another tool – it’s acting as a new identity inside the enterprise, one that never sleeps and often ignores boundaries,” remarked Holger Schulze from Cybersecurity Insiders. “Without visibility and robust governance, enterprises will keep finding their data in places it was never meant to be.”

Remember, “You cannot secure an AI agent you do not identify, and you cannot govern what you cannot see.” Wise words indeed.
