The transition is set to take place by May 2025. This gives Skype users a couple of months to find a new messaging platform that suits their needs.
Skype will be available until May 5, 2025, giving users ample time to explore Teams and make the switch.
Microsoft Teams, which comes as part of the Office Suite, is available for free download on their official website. It’s free for personal use, with premium options for those who need more features.
For those who primarily use Skype for personal chats, Microsoft recommends transitioning to the Teams Free version to continue their conversations. They even offer a way to sync contacts and chat history between Skype and Teams to make the shift seamless.
But switching to Teams isn’t mandatory; users can opt for another app if they prefer. Microsoft also allows users to export their Skype data, including contacts, calls, and chat history.
Premium Skype Users Get Some Extra Time
Premium Skype users will have their subscriptions extended until the end of their current credits and subscriptions. However, once these expire, they’ll need to make the switch. New users won’t have the option for paid subscriptions.
Microsoft introduced Teams in 2017 as a comprehensive communication tool for both personal and business use. It offers various collaborative features, including video conferencing, catering to power users. The tool gained popularity during the COVID-19 lockdowns when online communication became essential for many.
Despite the loyal following, Skype couldn’t keep up with the changing times and evolving needs. As a result, Microsoft is retiring Skype and pushing Teams as the new alternative.
