Google Chrome Password Manager Flaw Triggered Outage

Hey there, WordPress users! Have you heard about the recent hiccup Google Chrome faced with its password manager feature? It caused quite a stir among users, leaving them without access to their stored credentials for nearly 18 hours.

What Happened with Google Chrome Password Manager?

Google recently shed light on the outage that affected the global user base of Google Chrome’s Password Manager.

According to their incident report, the glitch persisted for almost 18 hours, during which users couldn’t see their saved login details in the browser. While users could still save new passwords, retrieving them became a challenge.

Along with password visibility, the issue also impacted Chrome’s auto-fill feature, forcing users to manually enter their details on websites. This inconvenience caused quite a headache for those accustomed to the browser’s auto-fill functionality.

Fortunately, the problem was isolated to a specific Chrome version (127.0.6533.57), sparing users on other versions from the ordeal. However, since most users eventually updated to the latest version, the glitch affected a significant portion of the user base.

As expected, users took to social media to vent their frustrations. Reports of Chrome crashes and persistent “Save Password?” prompts flooded platforms like Reddit.

Google became aware of the issue through widespread user feedback, as highlighted in Google’s bug report.

The incident report revealed that the problem persisted from July 24 to July 25, 2024, impacting 2% of users within the affected user base. Google attributed the issue to a change in product behavior without proper feature guarding, which their engineers swiftly rectified.

Temporary Fix Available

While Google continues to investigate the flaw, they have rolled out a temporary fix for users: restarting their browsers. Here’s how you can implement the workaround:

Launch Chrome with ” --enable-features=SkipUndecryptablePasswords” command line flag.
Locate Chrome shortcut on desktop. If you don’t have it, go to chrome://settings/manageProfile and at the bottom enable “Create desktop shortcut”.
1. Fully exit Chrome
2. Go to desktop and right click the shortcut then click Properties.
3. To the target field paste the following string to the end ” --enable-features=SkipUndecryptablePasswords“.
4. Close the dialog with OK and launch Chrome using this shortcut.
