7 tasks that waste your IT team’s time

Hey there, IT teams! We know your time is precious, and we understand the struggles you face when other things get in the way. Let’s talk about seven common time-wasters for your IT team.

Let’s dive into some of the challenges faced by IT teams in companies. While I may not have been on an IT team myself, I’ve closely collaborated with them in my role in the security department. Here are some key issues that, if addressed, could lighten the load on your IT team:

1. Everything has to be done manually (high volumes of manual tasks)

Dealing with a large number of manual tasks such as software installations, updates, and enhancements can be time-consuming. Implementing automation tools can be a game-changer in streamlining these processes.

2. Everything would be so much easier if the users “didn’t exist” (dealing with preventable incidents)

Investing in user education to prevent incidents that could easily be avoided can save valuable time that IT teams spend on handling requests.

3. Fire-fighting equipment (lack of focus on preventive activities)

Shifting focus from firefighting urgent issues to preventive measures can help reduce the occurrence of incidents in the long run.

4. Anarchy in information management (information is not centralized)

Centralizing and organizing information assets can help IT teams better manage data and ensure its availability and integrity.

5. The Swiss Army knife effect (wide variety of tasks, beyond the true remit of IT)

Clear task definitions and guidance from department coordinators can help IT teams stay focused on their core responsibilities.

6. Improvisation (lack of documentation and standardized processes)

Documenting tasks and procedures is crucial for preparedness in dealing with incidents and ensuring continual improvement in daily tasks.

7. Megabytes of unneeded (or non-essential) reports

Focusing on generating essential reports with relevant information can prevent wastage of resources on unnecessary data processing.

These are some common challenges faced by IT teams, but there may be others as well. What do you think? Are there any other time-wasters that you’ve encountered in your IT journey?
